At a glance
Where they are
The Costa del Sol is the coast of the province of Málaga (Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, Nerja). The Costa Tropical is the coast of the province of Granada (Almuñécar, Salobreña, Motril, Castell de Ferro).
Scale of tourism
The Costa del Sol accounts for about a third of Andalusia’s tourism and saw rapid, largely unplanned building from the 1960s. The Costa Tropical has smaller seaside towns with farmland and greenhouses between them.
Flights
Málaga–Costa del Sol airport is the busiest international airport in Andalusia, with a train to Málaga city and Fuengirola. The Costa Tropical is served by Granada airport (smaller) or by Málaga.
Beaches
Many Costa Tropical beaches are pebbly or dark sand, with coves for snorkelling. Check each beach before you go.
Beyond the beach
From the Costa Tropical, Granada and the Alhambra, the Alpujarra villages and Sierra Nevada are natural day trips. The Costa del Sol has the largest concentration of golf courses in continental Europe.
When the Costa del Sol is the better choice
If you want a big resort with everything within walking distance, a wide choice of hotels, golf, nightlife or the shortest transfer from Málaga airport, the Costa del Sol will suit you better. Without a car, its train line and denser bus network are also an advantage.
When the Costa Tropical is the better choice
If you prefer smaller towns, want to mix beach days with Granada and the mountains, or are happy to drive, the Costa Tropical gives a more varied and quieter holiday.
